Maxillofacial surgery is one of the complex surgeries that are performed for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. One of the common concerns of patients before performing this surgery is the amount of pain and discomfort after the operation. In this article, we will examine this issue and explain how to manage pain and complications after surgery.

Is jaw and face surgery painful?

Maxillofacial surgery is performed painlessly during the procedure due to the use of advanced methods and anesthetic drugs. After surgery, the patient may experience some discomfort or pain, but these can be controlled with prescribed medications.

Factors affecting postoperative pain

1. Type of surgery

The amount of pain after surgery depends on the type of operation. For example:

  • Smaller surgeries, such as minor jaw surgeries, usually cause less pain.
  • More complex surgeries, such as jaw reconstruction or correction, may be more painful.

2. Pharmaceutical management

Medicines prescribed by the doctor play an important role in reducing pain after surgery. These drugs include pain relievers, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.

3. Post-surgery care

Strict adherence to post-surgery tips, such as using a cold compress and avoiding hard foods, can help reduce pain.

Consuming soft foods and liquids helps reduce pressure on the jaw and reduce pain.

4. See a doctor if needed

In case of unusual pain or other problems, it is necessary to see a doctor.

Benefits of maxillofacial surgery

A recent highlight of my office was a combined surgery to correct severe maxillofacial problems. The patient presented with upper and lower jaw disharmony, improper chin symmetry, and functional problems such as difficulty in chewing and speaking. After careful examination, combined surgery including maxilla advancement , mandibular setback and genioplasty was planned and performed for him.

Preliminary examination and detailed planning

In the initial examination, it was found that the upper jaw was significantly posterior than normal and the lower jaw was anterior than standard. To investigate more details, we used CBCT imaging , which provided a detailed 3D view of facial bones and structures. These images helped us plan the surgery more accurately.

Surgical procedures

The surgery was performed using advanced techniques and in three stages:

  1. Maxilla advancement : The upper jaw bone was carefully cut and moved forward to improve facial balance.
  2. Mandible Setback : The lower jaw was moved back to better coordinate with the upper jaw.
  3. Genioplasty : The chin was adjusted to the ideal position to complete the symmetry of the face.

The final result

After surgery, the patient experienced significant changes in facial symmetry, improved jaw function, and overall appearance. The images before and after the surgery show the successful results of this specialized intervention. The patient was able to resume chewing and speaking easily and was very satisfied with his new appearance.

Post-surgery care

For faster recovery and reduction of possible complications, the patient should follow the following instructions:

  • Consumption of soft foods for up to 6 weeks.
  • Using a cold compress in the early days to reduce swelling.
  • Regular visits to the clinic to check the healing process.
